El SAN JUANITO

There is complete clarity about the festival of Saint John: the festival is celebrated around June 23, and the entire event is in honor of Saint John. The words sanjuán and sanjuanito, both used in relation to music and dance, are two names of the same genre.

Apart from the possibility that the name sanjuanito may have descended from the festival of San Juan, Isabel Aretz points out that the origin of the name can be sought in the huayno, a genus from Peru and Bolivia. It is not clear what the musical relationships the huayno and the sanjuanito have, and how the name sanjuanito may descend from the huayno.

TOLLS

Today the sanjuanito is performed with the combination of instruments originating from Ecuador, such as the rondador, the pingullo, the dulzainas, the bandolín and the bass drum, to which are added the guitar, the quena and the zampoñas.
